Edward Bunker is one of the great cult writers in American history. After his parents divorce, he became a ward of the state of California, which led to Bunker becoming the youngest inmate in the history of San Quentin prison. Self taught, he became a brilliant author, writing novels, short stories and a autobiography called Mr. Blue, Memoirs of an Renegade, which has been described as a literary triumph. He was also nominated for an Oscar for best screenplay(Runaway Train) and appeared as Mr. Blue in the movie Reservoir Dogs. Stark is Mr. Bunker's first novel but the last to be released. Set on the California coast in the 1960's, It follows Stark, hustler, junkie and con man as he attempts make a last big score and stay out of jail. Bunker was simply a great writer, his life gave him an understanding of criminals and his books have an insiders knowledge that make his stories authentic on a level other writers only dream about. His narrative was very smooth, to the point, his characters were devloped in great detail. Fans of noir crime fiction should consider Mr. Bunker must reading and Stark is great place to start.
